How To Pitch To Be on a Podcast

Thanks to everyone who reached out to me when I posted about it being the perfect time to pitch yourself to podcasters. We are all at home and craving great content. Some want to be informed; others want to be entertained. Either way, this is your time to expand your reach and I am going to tell you how:

-Identify your goal: With more than ONE MILLION podcasts; there is something for everyone. Because of this, you want to be clear on who you are and why you want to be on a podcast. If you want to position yourself as an expert, look for podcasts aligned with your subject of expertise. Or, if you’re a musician, look for podcasts about the music industry or culture.

-Now that you’ve identified your goal, it’s time to find podcasts that may be a fit for you. Since there is no complete list of ALL podcasts, it can be a bit daunting. But, this is where using your resources come into play. There are specific groups on Facebook like Podcast Guest Connection or the website, podcastguests.com that can help. Another option is to follow hashtags related to your subject area and search on Instagram or Twitter for a match.

-Listen before you pitch to be on the podcast. Each podcaster has their own rhythm and flow. It is helpful to familiarize yourself with how the podcast is organized before you’re a guest. This way, you will be more comfortable once it’s your turn to be a guest.

-Similar to any other type of media opportunity, you need a pitch outline. A standard pitch email should include a brief background about yourself, what you know about the podcast you’re pitching to and why you would be a great fit. Depending on popularity and availability, you may hear back instantly. If you haven’t heard back in a few days, don’t be afraid to follow-up. Eventually, you will be asked for a headshot so make sure you have one on deck.

Using resources, being ready and having clarity is the perfect recipe to utilizing podcasts to reach or grow your audience. And don’t forget, podcasters need you just as much as you need them. A great podcast interview can be another tool in your marketing toolbox.
