“The Oprah of Foreign Policy”

When was the last time you had a riveting discussion on foreign policy? For the average American, the answer is never. However, our world is continuously shrinking and what happens in other countries affect us all. The best podcasts combine passion with purpose. The best aspect of podcasting is that it gives everyone the opportunity to make a difference in our world. For Former Obama appointee Bunmi Akinnusotu, she knew that she could do a better job of educating the public on foreign policy than the so-called experts. Instead of sitting on the sidelines and shouting at the TV or radio, Bunmi decided it was her turn to take a stand.

The “What in the World?” Podcast was launched in 2017 to make US foreign policy relevant to everyday people. “I want more Americans to understand that Foreign Policy/Global politics is in everything we do, eat, drink, wear, and everywhere we go”, states Bunmi. According to a survey conducted by the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Geographic Society, there is a lack of understanding on how global concepts affect the U.S.

Bunmi admits that, “foreign policy is not glamorous but I’ve found a way to make the conversation accessible to people who aren’t wonks.” She has been able to achieve the impossible. Excellent conversations with a variety of experts intertwined with great music. The combination makes you forget that you’re actually learning something useful.

Beyond her innate ability to communicate and make people feel comfortable, Bunmi has had to learn important lessons to grow her podcast. Bunmi says that, “podcasting is a marathon not a race.” She continues, “trying to do everything all at once and perfectly, is unrealistic. Particularly when you’re doing this by yourself, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. I’ve learned to take my time and build gradually”.

Excellent advice from someone who is using her voice to make a change in our World.
